WARNING: MOSQUITOS

Please warn you YW and leaders to be prepared for mosquitos. Bring repellant, long sleeves for evening activities and any other great ideas for protecting yourselves! Let's be safe up there!

With that being said, the policy for Mia Shalom reads:

Lighter Fluid & Candles
* Please take note that no lighter fluid is allowed at camp.  We recommend that you purchase pre-lit briquettes so that you don't need any lighter fluid.
* Candles and melted wax are also not allowed at MIA Shalom.
* Please read the MIA Shalom Policies closely so that you are aware of all of the other rules regarding cooking & fires.

Shirts

Some items regarding shirts:

*Please pick up your shirts from Dalene Owen if you have not yet.
*You can pass them out at anytime you would like as a ward.
*We would like you to wear your shirts to the Friday night, Bishops week-in-review, fireside. (you can wear it other times during camp too)
*Because our numbers shift while we figure out who is going and who is not, you may have extra t-shirts or need more. Please, please turn in extras!

Service Project Update

We will be planting for our Mia Shalom service project. "We will be planting across the road from where we planted last year in the South area (to the right).  You will come across the Dam, pick up the full milk jugs that are there and go into the south area past the bathroom.  When you come to the fork by Beck's Byway go left past the cabins. Continue on that road  until you see us.  There will be no access by cars so please have the girls carry their shovels.  You may bring them to the South Parking lot.  You will need to be there at your assigned time.  Each person will be planting about 2 or more trees."

The milk jugs you have already collected will be used for cross fit and left for watering the trees in the coming weeks.

Please make sure your shovels are labeled.

Thank You!

More Information

The gate to Camp Mia Shalom is open at 6:00am for those interested in taking up supply trailers ahead of the buses. Please make sure you have leaders to meet the YW and get them loaded on the buses, and your 1 leader riding with them.

Please supply one 24 pack of SEPTIC TANK SAFE TOILET PAPER per ward. You will also need to bring gloves (optional), paper towels or cleaning rags for you bathroom cleaning assignment.

You are welcome to give the T-shirts and YCL sweatshirts out at anytime. The girls are welcome to wear them anytime at camp. We are asking everyone to wear them to the Friday night, Bishops week-in-review fireside.

Information Email

Hello Ward YW Presidents and Camp Directors,

We are so excited about camp and want to share with you the updated schedule, dinner assignments for stake leaders and other information we hope will be helpful in camp planning.

The Camp Kick Off Fireside will be Wednesday, June 21st at 7:00pm, in the stake center chapel. We look forward to sharing the theme with the girls and their parents. And there's refreshments! Shortly after refreshments the young women participating in 'Path of Righteousness' will go to their assigned rooms with their parents for a quick run thru of their talks.

Attached you will find information to help with the geocaching activity. The Shalom missionaries have 5 GPS units available. Please check in with them and reserve them for your time slot on arrival at camp. If you choose to participate a small trinket you provide is usually left in the box. Please prepare an alternate activity for your ward to participate in if you choose to not go geocaching.

FOOD: Along with breakfast and lunch the stake will also be providing snacks during the waterfront/challenge course time slots and a treat after the stake presidency speaks on Thursday evening. Please remind your girls to bring a sack lunch with them on Tuesday for the bus ride.

The Q&A on the schedule during lunch time is for ward presidents, leaders and camp directors to meet in a designated area with Mary Rencher, Diane Mangum and/or President Peterson if you have any questions or concerns you would like to address or have any special needs.

We will load the buses at the stake center on Tuesday at 11:30am, and will leave the parking lot at 12:00.  The buses will leave Camp Shalom at 1:00pm on Saturday and are projected to return around 3:00. We will have a couple of contact people within the stake for urgent or emergency messages. Contact information will be given out at the camp kick off.

We are still not informed on whether we will be planting or watering trees for the Shalom service project. We ask that you provide a shovel for every 3-4 young women, as many empty milk jugs with lids as possible and work gloves.

If you have not already, would you please let Jenn Knapp or Holly Williams (5th ward) know the name of the leader who will be going on the 4th year overnight hike with your ward.

Please be aware that every ward has been assigned a cleaning duty, during the week and for checkout. Please make sure you know when your cleaning duty is assigned and plan appropriately. We are aware that time is tight on Friday, so the stake leaders will be taking care of the biffy duty that day.

Please remind your young women to bring an extra bath/beach towel to use as their mat for yoga!

Thank you for all your hard work, patience and love! We greatly appreciate your work on camp and devotion to the young women in our stake!

4th Year Hike Letter 2017

4th Year Hike
Girls Camp 2017

Hello 4th Year Hikers!  We are excited to backpack and camp a night with you at beautiful Camp Shalom!  The following are some details for you that will be useful in planning our adventure.

When:  We will be leaving from our Camp Stake Pavilion on Wednesday, June 28th at 4:00pm
You will need to have your packs ready to go by 3:00pm.  We will return to camp the following morning around 9:00am.

Who:  All 4th year campers and 1 leader from each ward.  We will also have 2 priesthood holders with us.

Where:  We will be hiking 2 to 2.5 miles- (depending on if there is still snow) from Camp to the end of Beck’s Byway trail at a campsite that has a fire ring and a biffy.

What to Bring:
-Backpack- a backpacking backpack is preferable, but a large school backpack could work if you can attach your bedding to it and carry it comfortably.  Guidelines suggest that your pack weigh less than a quarter of your body weight.  We will not do a “weigh-in” so you will be responsible to make sure you can comfortably carry you own pack.

-Sleeping Bag- It may get cold at night, so make sure your sleeping bag is suitable for the outdoors and colder temperatures!  You will be so much happier to be warm than cold!  You will want to put your sleeping bag in a plastic garbage bag in case we experience rain on the trail.  You can  use that same bag to cover your pack when you go to bed.  Pillows are hard to carry.  Just bring a case and use your sweatshirt or jacket as stuffing!

-Sleeping Pad- Make sure it is compact and easy to carry.  It will keep you warmer as you sleep!

-Tents & Tarp- You will need to provide your own tent to sleep in that night. It is strongly suggested to bring a tarp to go under your tent because June at Shalom can be wet!   It would be wise to get together as a ward and plan tent/sleeping assignments.  You can bring a larger tent for everyone and distribute parts to each girl to make travel easier OR you can bring smaller tents for 2 people.  No one should sleep alone!  Remember, leaders can’t share a tent with the girls.  You can get in touch with other adults who are going and make a new friend and tent buddy in the same night! :)

-Shoes- So important to wear a good comfortable pair...tennis shoes are fine.

-Water- There is NO water source!  We will be packing in all of our water. Each girl/leader should bring a 2 liter bottle of water. That should be sufficient for the time we will be away if you are careful.

-Food-  We will be eating dinner and Breakfast at our camp. You will be responsible for bringing, cooking and cleaning up your own food.  We will have a campfire on which to cook.  There are approximately 45 of us camping together so fire space might be limited. Keep meals simple and minimal.  Bring enough to fill you up, but remember you have to clean, prepare and haul out ALL of your food and waste.
Ideas:
Dinner:
Cup of Soup
Potato flakes and gravy mixes
Lipton Skillet dinners
Bagel Sandwich
Tin foil dinners

Breakfast:
Provided by the Stake!- Pick up at pavillion when we meet to leave.

We will provide a campfire treat from the Stake.

You can bring snacks, just keep them minimal as well.  Little critters like to chew through     packs if your food is not closed up well.  For this trip, less is more!

-Cook ware-  Water is limited, so washing dishes will be difficult.  You should be able to get by with a
Cup, bowl, and spoon/fork and a pot to boil water in (best to team up with water pot- maybe 1 per
ward.)  Paper towels may come in handy for clean up.  Paper products are always easy to clean!

Personal Equipment:
-hand sanitizer
- wet wipes to freshen yourself-These are awesome since we will not have much water
-a warm, lightweight jacket
-garbage bag, to cover pack
-plastic bag, to put personal garbage in
-personal hygiene items
-mosquito repellant- very important!
-hat or bandana
-flashlight or headlamp
-matches in water tight container
-couple of bandaids
-warm hat
-light weight gloves or mittens
-fresh pair of socks to sleep in and wear home
-something to sleep in… do not sleep in clothes that you hiked in or you will be cold!
-1 shirt to change into after backpacking- so you won’t be cold all night.

Q & A #3

Q: Do the wards need to supply their own firewood?

A: No, we are very grateful to the priesthood brothers who have volunteered to go up on the Saturday prior to camp and cut from the area around Mia Shalom for our whole stakes firewood needs.

Q: When is the stake camp kick-off fireside?

A: The fireside is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21st at 7:00pm. There will be a short path of righteousness program for 6th years and their parents following the fireside. Put the date on the calendar and we will be sending more information, as well as invites to the wards.

Lifeguards Needed

The members of the Stake camp committee who are in charge of overseeing the waterfront and fitness activities are looking for certified lifeguards to be present at the lake activities. Shalom asks that we provide our own lifeguards and requires two to be on site at all times we are using the lake. We'd like to first offer this experience to the young women in the stake who are certified and will already be going to camp. Could you please ask your ward young women if there are any who would be willing to serve in this way while at camp? If you could then get us the names/emails of these girls we will contact them about this fun opportunity. Thank you!

Q&A #2

Q:  How many priesthood leaders do we need to assign from our ward?

A: You do not need to assign any priesthood leaders from your ward. The stake high council is aware of the priesthood leadership needs at camp. They will assign and provide priesthood leadership at camp, at the 4th year overnight hike and the main gate Mia Shalom assignment.

Q:  What do we need to bring for the Mia Shalom service project?

A:  We have not yet heard if we will be planting or watering trees. I am suggesting that every ward plan for both.  To plan appropriately I asked for the wards to provide a shovel for every three girls in their ward (labeled), and an empty milk jug per girl (they have water there). The jugs will stay at Shalom as a donation for camps coming in the later months. If you do not have a milk jug per YW, do not worry it will work out just fine to share also. They said there is an assembly line way they water. I would recommend each girl bring a pair of work gloves also, especially if we end up planting.

We are so grateful to Stately Type for their awesome T-shirt designs. And the winner, voted in by the YCLs is the orange/blue FLAME!

Not frequently, but asked questions...

What are the facilities in the wilderness area of Mia Shalom like?
*There are 20 cabins, that fit 20 YW/leaders each (that means generally 2 cabins per ward)
*7 water hydrants to share between the cabins
*1 bathroom with 10 toilets
*most cabins have a fire ring, some share. each ward will have their own.

How many leaders should attend from each ward?
*this varies based on availability of leaders and number of YW, there is not an exact ratio. we had anywhere between 7 - 13 leaders per ward in 2015.

Will we have ward time during the water/confidence course?
*yes, but if you would like to participate in volleyball, waterfront, confidence course and GPS activities there will not be a lot of extra time. we are still working on the best possible schedule and will let you know as soon as possible.

I'd love to help answer any questions. Please email or text and I'll answer them in the next post of FAQ.

Roster and Permission Slips DUE April 15th

What is needed...
-Name of each girl attending (place an asterisk by those currently unsure)
As much as possible at this point it would also be nice to know if they are staying
for the entire event or will be coming and going. How many will be riding the bus?
-Camp level
-T-shirt size (the t-shirts will be slightly fitted)
-Any food allergies
-Any special medical or physical accommodations required
-Medications being taken or medication allergies (don't stress about this if you don't know right now. I can get that information with the permission forms)

-Name of each leader attending
-T-shirt size

We will need to know which leaders will be attending which events (1 per event for each ward) and which will be riding the bus with your girls (again, 1 per ward).

We will also need a more detailed schedule for those girls that will coming and going during the week.  And, of course, permission forms. You will need the LDS church permission form for the YW and an adult permission form for all leaders attending.
