4th Year Hike Letter 2017

4th Year Hike
Girls Camp 2017

Hello 4th Year Hikers!  We are excited to backpack and camp a night with you at beautiful Camp Shalom!  The following are some details for you that will be useful in planning our adventure.

When:  We will be leaving from our Camp Stake Pavilion on Wednesday, June 28th at 4:00pm
You will need to have your packs ready to go by 3:00pm.  We will return to camp the following morning around 9:00am.

Who:  All 4th year campers and 1 leader from each ward.  We will also have 2 priesthood holders with us.

Where:  We will be hiking 2 to 2.5 miles- (depending on if there is still snow) from Camp to the end of Beck’s Byway trail at a campsite that has a fire ring and a biffy.

What to Bring:
-Backpack- a backpacking backpack is preferable, but a large school backpack could work if you can attach your bedding to it and carry it comfortably.  Guidelines suggest that your pack weigh less than a quarter of your body weight.  We will not do a “weigh-in” so you will be responsible to make sure you can comfortably carry you own pack.

-Sleeping Bag- It may get cold at night, so make sure your sleeping bag is suitable for the outdoors and colder temperatures!  You will be so much happier to be warm than cold!  You will want to put your sleeping bag in a plastic garbage bag in case we experience rain on the trail.  You can  use that same bag to cover your pack when you go to bed.  Pillows are hard to carry.  Just bring a case and use your sweatshirt or jacket as stuffing!

-Sleeping Pad- Make sure it is compact and easy to carry.  It will keep you warmer as you sleep!

-Tents & Tarp- You will need to provide your own tent to sleep in that night. It is strongly suggested to bring a tarp to go under your tent because June at Shalom can be wet!   It would be wise to get together as a ward and plan tent/sleeping assignments.  You can bring a larger tent for everyone and distribute parts to each girl to make travel easier OR you can bring smaller tents for 2 people.  No one should sleep alone!  Remember, leaders can’t share a tent with the girls.  You can get in touch with other adults who are going and make a new friend and tent buddy in the same night! :)

-Shoes- So important to wear a good comfortable pair...tennis shoes are fine.

-Water- There is NO water source!  We will be packing in all of our water. Each girl/leader should bring a 2 liter bottle of water. That should be sufficient for the time we will be away if you are careful.

-Food-  We will be eating dinner and Breakfast at our camp. You will be responsible for bringing, cooking and cleaning up your own food.  We will have a campfire on which to cook.  There are approximately 45 of us camping together so fire space might be limited. Keep meals simple and minimal.  Bring enough to fill you up, but remember you have to clean, prepare and haul out ALL of your food and waste.
Ideas:
Dinner:
Cup of Soup
Potato flakes and gravy mixes
Lipton Skillet dinners
Bagel Sandwich
Tin foil dinners

Breakfast:
Provided by the Stake!- Pick up at pavillion when we meet to leave.

We will provide a campfire treat from the Stake.

You can bring snacks, just keep them minimal as well.  Little critters like to chew through     packs if your food is not closed up well.  For this trip, less is more!

-Cook ware-  Water is limited, so washing dishes will be difficult.  You should be able to get by with a
Cup, bowl, and spoon/fork and a pot to boil water in (best to team up with water pot- maybe 1 per
ward.)  Paper towels may come in handy for clean up.  Paper products are always easy to clean!

Personal Equipment:
-hand sanitizer
- wet wipes to freshen yourself-These are awesome since we will not have much water
-a warm, lightweight jacket
-garbage bag, to cover pack
-plastic bag, to put personal garbage in
-personal hygiene items
-mosquito repellant- very important!
-hat or bandana
-flashlight or headlamp
-matches in water tight container
-couple of bandaids
-warm hat
-light weight gloves or mittens
-fresh pair of socks to sleep in and wear home
-something to sleep in… do not sleep in clothes that you hiked in or you will be cold!
-1 shirt to change into after backpacking- so you won’t be cold all night.
